Normandy, the northwest of the 18 French regions, was named in 2019 by Lonely Planet as one of the world’s best regions to visit. Here, travelers find magnificent white chalk cliffs, D-day landing beaches such as Omaha Beach, Castles and Hiking Paths.

You should go to the seaside town of Étretat to experience some of the best examples of raw white cliffs and quiet beaches. The rocks contain three natural arches, including the pointed formation known as the ‘needle’, which rises 70 meters above sea level and is made famous by Monet.

After that, one should go to the incredible UNESCO-place Le Mont-Saint-Michel, Normandy’s most visited monument, which is on the border with Brittany. This medieval monastery is surrounded by a bay that is flooded daily by the tide, creating a magical island with a monastery on top.

If you want to experience something more touristy, you can go to Saint-Malo in Brittany. Originally, it was a fortified citadel, built to protect the mouth of the Rance River from pirates.

As you walk through the cobbled streets of the Old Town, you are traced back in time and can enjoy the breathtaking sea view, including two islands with their own fortresses, which can be reached on foot at low tide.

The Loire Valley has sights for all types of tourists – from lively cities such as Orléans to historic medieval towns such as Chinon and magnificent nature parks in Anjou.

Remember to stop at Loire Châteaux and explore the castles and magnificent gardens that are found at almost fifty properties open to the public around the city of Tours – including the castles Amboise and Chenonceau.
