European Day Waiting / Day

« In 2025, European Day is a special event because we celebrate Schuman’s declarations for 75 years, » emphasizes on the EU’s website.

More than 45% of Latvian citizens have a positive picture of the EU as a whole, and about 60% of our country’s citizens have expressed trust in the EU, leads to concluding Eurobarometer Survey. Other messages are expected to appear around May 9, which will show that the attitude of the majority of society towards the EU is favorable.

For Latvia, 21 years of participation in the EU has brought financial benefits, such as infrastructure improvement and construction projects. Undoubted benefits are also simple travel conditions within the EU and the transparency of financial settlements provided by belonging to the eurozone. In addition, Latvia, as a small country, has allowed the EU to gain more international influence, both politically and economically. It should also be emphasized that inclusion in the EU has strengthened democracy in our society in the sense of a polished European decision -making style based on tolerance against different views and in the high -profile culture without the only right point of view.

The accusations addressed to the EU, on the other hand, are related to bureaucracy and re -regulation. It is undeniable that some of the EU regulatory documents, created with quite rational intentions, have become extremely confused during application. The General Data Protection Regulation, which aims to monitor the circulation of citizens’ data, is to be remembered here, but there have been tragicomic cases in the process of applying the Regulation where even the names and surnames of persons were even hidden. There are other examples that EU conditions may not improve the situation, but to confuse.

However, this spring, the most serious problem in the EU is not the bureaucracy, but the relevance (or non -compliance) of priorities set to global issues. These priorities include the so -called European Green Course and the fight against climate change, which has been a skeptical attitude in Latvia and in other countries lately. It is also emphasized that in this geopolitical situation, when Russia implements military aggression in Ukraine, China does not hide economic ambitions, but the US demonstrates unpredictability, the EU should become a stronger global leader and offer the world its agenda. Will I be able to do it – time will tell.
