Europe will wait with new sanctions to possible talks in Zelenska and Putin in Istanbul / Day
Following the talks between US and European officials on Monday, it has become clear that the United States wants to provide the possibility of Russian -Ukraine talks on Thursday before increasing pressure on Putin, Bloomberg points out.
If Putin refuses to meet Zelenski, or if Russia did not agree to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire on Thursday, European leaders will call on US President Donald Trump to execute his promise and impose sanctions on Moscow, Bloomberg sources said.
The Trump Administration has prepared a number of options for more economic pressure on Russia if Trump decides to take such a step, previously reported Bloomberg. Trump himself announced on May 8 that « the United States and its partners would impose additional sanctions » if no ceasefire was achieved.
The leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Poland and Ukraine said on Saturday they had succeeded in gaining widespread support for their plan for a 30 -day ceasefire from 12 May.
Ukraine immediately announced that he was ready to observe the ceasefire, but Putin proposed direct talks in Russia and Ukraine on May 15 in Istanbul, but did not mention the ceasefire’s proposal at all.
Zelensky then announced that he was ready to meet Putin in Istanbul personally, but Putin had not yet answered.
Trump urged Ukraine to participate in the negotiations in Turkey and did not rule out that he could go to Istanbul himself.
