Europe is the fastest warming continent in the world, scientists say

Last year, it was the hottest in the history of measurements for Europe.

London. Europe is the fastest warming continent in the world, with countries in 2024 affecting the significant consequences of climate change, extremely the weather and record temperatures.

This stems from the report published on Tuesday by the UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the European Union Copernicus meteorological service, DPA reports.

The hottest year

Approximately 100 scientists participated in the report and, according to their findings last year, was the hottest in the history of measurements for Europe.

Storms They were often strong and flooding the most extensive since 2013. They have claimed at least 335 lives and hit approximately 413,000 people, the report said.

According to experts, there was an apparent climate contrast between the east and the west of the continent: the east plagued extremely dry and warm weather, the West experienced warm but wet weather.

The report states that Europe is one of the regions with the greatest expected increase in flood risk. Global warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius, according to estimates, could lead to 30,000 deaths per year due to extreme heat.

« Every additional fraction of the degree of temperature elevation is serious because it highlights the risks to our lives, economics and planet, » warns Wmo Celeste Saul’s Secretary General.

On the contrary, the cold extremes were record low in 2024. All European regions have recorded ice loss, while glaciers in Scandinavia and Svalbard (Spicberga) have recorded the highest level of ice loss in history. The UN in 2025 therefore calls for protection.

We must be more durable

Florence Rabierová, Director General of the European Center for Medium -term weather forecasts (ECMWF), said that nearly a third of the river network in Europe has exceeded the limit of high flood activity and thermal stress on the continent continues to grow.

According to her, it is therefore crucial to build more durability. She added that 51 percent of European cities already have their own climate change adaptation plan.

According to the report, the production of net electricity has reached a record level in 2024 and broke the current record of 43 percent of 2023. This increase allegedly reflects the continued efforts of Europe for decarbonization.

Saul stressed that adaptation to climate change and more extreme weather is essential.

« WMO and its partners therefore strengthen timely warning systems and climate services to help companies better adapt. We are making progress, but we have to go further, faster and together, » she added.
