Portugal will bring the theme of the protection of copyright and guarantee of transparency, in the context of European legislation on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Brussels, next week.

« Portugal will take to the Council of Ministers of Culture of the European Union, which will take place on May 13, in Brussels, under the Education, Youth, Culture and Sports Council (EJCD) the theme ‘The Value of Cultural and Creative Sectors in the Development of Artificial Intelligence-safeguarding copyright and guarantee of transparency in the European Regulation of AI’, » the Ministry of Culture said.

The decision of the Portuguese Executive is the approach of the entry into force of the “relevant provisions of the European Regulation of Artificial Intelligence”, which makes it imperative that the use of general use models respect fundamental rights and guarantee complete transparency in the use of protected works.

In particular attention is the right of author and the related rights.

According to the Ministry, Portugal had already promoted this debate to the European level, since April 7 and 8, when the informal Council of Ministers of Culture in Warsaw was held.

At the time, the Secretary of State for Culture, Alberto Santos, launched the theme with the other Member States, appealing to the revision of the General Purpose Code of Practice Project, aiming at its full alignment with the European author’s right and the effective defense of creators and cultural diversity.

« For Portugal, this debate is strategic for Europe’s economic and cultural sustainability and to ensure solid European positioning and concerted to global technological operators, » says the tutela, quoted by the Lusa agency.

The Ministry of Culture argues that the defense of an ambitious and legally coherent code of practices is “essential for preserving cultural diversity, creators’ rights and confidence in technological development”.
