EU ministers want more European tech in an ‘open way’

What did thirteen European ministers come to do in Amsterdam yesterday and today? An important topic, now many European governments, citizens and companies are struggling with their dependence on large American tech companies.

In their final declaration, the ministers write that the digital competitiveness of the EU and the tech-sovereignty must be increased, ‘in an open way’. The latter requires a long footnote. In summary, the thirteen governments mainly want to boost private investments by reducing the amount of annoying rules and differences between European countries. « The digital regulations must be revised and, where possible, deregulated. » Elon Musk could have said it.

The thirteen ministers themselves do not make promises about buying European tech or making investments. Virkkunen also aims mainly for reducing bureaucracy and reporting obligations, she said in a short conversation with journalists. She does not rule out the fact that this must be done on the DMA and DSA, the European parade tickets of the tech registering. « That is not a reopening of the DMA and DSA, » she says. « It’s one fitness checkto see if there is, for example, unnecessary overlap with the AI ​​law. «
