EU criticizes US unwillingness for agreement on customs duties
The European Commission today expressed regret over the lack of US commitment to reach an agreement with the European Union to avoid customs duties, two days before their entry into force for European steel and aluminum.
« It seems that the US administration is not committed to reaching an agreement, » said European Commissioner for Trade Maros Jefchovich in Brussels. He recalled that he visited the United States in February to initiate constructive dialogue to avoid unnecessary escalation of the trade dispute.
As part of a series of trading restrictions, US President Donald Trump plans to introduce new customs duties of 25 % to imports of steel and aluminum by all trading partners, including the EU.
These measures should take effect tomorrow.
Jefchovich stressed that the EU and the United States had identified several areas where they could find common interests during the negotiations.
« But one hand cannot applaud himself, » he said, stressing that the EU was determined to protect its interests and respond to any US trade measures.
– Just as the United States protects its interests, so the EU will protect its. That is why we will always defend European companies, workers and consumers of unjustified customs duties – Jefchovich added, noting that the EU remains open to dialogue.
– We want a constructive and positive relationship with the United States. Our doors remain open to dialogue. Customs measures do not bring winners – he concluded.
