EU appointed a special representative to Cyprus – Cyprus Newspaper
Johannes Hahn, former member and vice president of the European Commission responsible for harmony and reforms, was assigned to the initiative of EU Commission President Ursula von Der Leyen in order to contribute to the solution process under the auspices of the United Nations. Hahn is expected to come to the island in the coming period and make contact with the parties.
In a statement made by the European Commission, Hahn would report directly to the President Von Der Leyen in this post and that the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Cyprus María ángela Holguín Cuéllar said.
The statement emphasized that this appointment reflects the determination of the EU on a comprehensive and sustainable solution objective in Cyprus in line with the United Nations decisions and EU principles. The special representative will make contacts to prepare the ground for the start of comprehensive negotiations.
Johannes Hahn served in the European Commission for three terms: Regional Policy (2010–2014), European Neighborhood Policy and Expansion Negotiations (2014–2019) and Budget and Administration (2019–2024). Before the commission member, he served as the Minister of Science and Research Between 2007-2010.
