Estonia will not withstand a four -day working week

In this decade, the culture of labor has become more flexible. For many, changing the work schedule made it possible to work from home or even from abroad. The strategic HR-partner of Luminor Liiz Mullasta explains whether they will be able to and when changes in the labor market lead to the ability to work four days instead of the usual five, BNS reports.

“Since November 2022, Belgium became the first country in the European Union, where workers can decide for themselves, they want to work four or five days a week. Having chosen a four -day week, workers will not lose their salary, but they must do the work of five days in four, ”said Mullast.

She noted that the initiative of Belgium on the legislative consolidation of the concept of a four -day working week is dictated by the desire to overcome a low level of employment. According to the Eurostat, currently only 72% of all Belgians aged 20-64 work, but the country wants to bring this figure to 80% using a four-day work week. At the same time, according to the latest data, in Estonia the level of employment in the same age group is 82.1%.

“One of the dangers of a four -day working week is that, although at first you can use four days and do five -day work, over time you can be in the comfort zone and you will not be able to withstand the intensive load for a long time. In such a small country as Estonia, it is difficult to imagine that people of working age would work less than expected. We can dream of a four -day working week, but reality is something else, ”said Mullast. “Of course, a lot depends on the ability of a particular employer to create a flexible work schedule.”

“In our demographic structure, the share of people born in the 70-80s is very high compared to those who are younger, and after 10 years they will already reach retirement age. The reality is that the retirement age is pushed away – if today there are already people on the age of 70 and older in the labor market, then in the future their share will grow. To keep the elderly in the labor market, employers need to create flexible conditions, since many of them will not be able to continue to work full -time, ”she added.

Since young generations have to bear the burden of the aging population, today special attention should be paid to how young people like to work.

“Generation Z is highly appreciated by freedom of choice of place of work. In Luminor, after the end of the test term, you can work 90 days from abroad within the European Union. The system operating for two years is very attractive for 20-year-old young people, ”Mullasta remarked, according to which this system also successfully attracts foreign talented youth to Estonia, allowing them to conduct a significant part of the year of the house.

While many Estonian companies invite people to completely return to the office, Luminor chose a different path. “One of the shortcomings of work in the home office is that if you work in it for too long, it can adversely affect your mental health, so we believe that it is very important to visit the office from time to time. Of course, provided that during the day you also actively communicate with colleagues, ”said Mullast.
