The government instructed the Ministry of Justice and Digital Technologies to offer Sweden and the Netherlands to start negotiations on the possibility of leasing prisons in Estonia.

Negotiations can, but are not required to end with the conclusion of the relevant agreements. The final decision on the conclusion of an international agreement will be made by Riigikoga, writes BNS.

According to the Minister of Justice and Digital Technologies of the Liice of Pacost, there are two options for the Tartu prison: to close it or offer jobs to residents of South Estonia and significantly strengthen security cooperation with another NATO country.

“Estonian prisons are respected all over the world and meet high standards. We have well -trained, highly qualified employees, working methods focused on protecting human rights, and very modern infrastructure. The work of the prison service is an important part of ensuring the internal security of Estonia, and it is important to preserve it for the safety of residents of South Estonia, ”Pacostan commented.

“Prison service resources can be effectively used to strengthen allied relations with Estonian partners. Renting places in prisons is both the creation of jobs and a way to control the expenses and revenues of the state, ”she added.

The previously analysis confirmed that the rental of prison premises in Estonia is possible from a legal point of view, is practically feasible and economically justified. Renting cameras will help maintain a critical reserve of personnel with special training in the field of internal security and relevant buildings, which will ensure the readiness of Estonia as a state for any crisis. All detainees after serving a term in Estonia will be returned to their countries, and none of them will be allowed to go beyond the prison.

Pacosta emphasized that Sweden and the Netherlands should be thanked for good cooperation during preliminary consultations. The current analysis showed that in everyday practice there is much in common, which allows you to establish cooperation between countries.

If negotiations are fruitful, an international agreement will be concluded between the countries, in which all important details will be agreed and formulated.
