From March 31, 2025, Estonia authorities will no longer recognize non -biometric passports issued by the Russian Federation.

Holders of a residence permit from Estonia and other EU countries, which are currently using the Russian non -biometric passport, will have to apply for a biometric passport until September 30, 2025.

Russia gives out biometric and non -biometric passports. Nebiometric passports issued by Russia do not comply with the recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and represent various risks for security, says the Estonian Foreign Ministry. Nebiometric external passports do not contain an electronic media of information, which means that there is no way to compare the identity of the owner of the passport with data on the chip.

Unlike the Russian biometric passport, the body that issued a non -biometric passport cannot be so easily identified that it complicates the identification of unrecognized documents (that is, issued in the occupied territories).

Russian passports (including biometric) issued in unrecognized territories are not accepted by the Schengen zone countries as actual travel documents.

As of March 20, 2025, Denmark and the Czech Republic still do not recognize or conditionally recognize non-biometric Russian passports.
