When it comes to actual skin protection, almost all products in the VKI test were able to convince, and in terms of environmental compatibility they failed.
Twelve sunscrees for the face with light protection factor 30 or more have been tested by consumer protectors, eleven funds proved to be reliable. « UV-A radiation is one of the main causes of wrinkles and an important factor in the development of all types of skin cancer, » VKI project manager Birgit Schiller recalled. « UV-B radiation, on the other hand, is directly responsible for sunburn and also plays a role in the development of skin cancer. »
Except for one product, all tested sunscreen convinced in UV protection. The « Ultra Sensitive Sunfluid » of the « Bicaresun » BIPA brand has failed. According to the testers, it offered « only poor protection against UV-B radiation ». However, this bipa’s brand is no longer being sold.
Defrising for outer packaging required
When evaluating environmental properties, it was examined how the ingredients influence the environment, how ecologically the packaging material is and how well it can be recycled. « As in past tests, there is still room for improvement, » criticized Schiller. Many products could achieve a significantly better environmental balance by avoiding outer packaging.
In all creams, « environmentally critical substances » are included « . Therefore, only two out of twelve products received an « average » assessment in terms of environmental compatibility, the rest was even worse.
In contrast, in the test point, all products “did well”. Compared to classic sunscreens, preparations can be applied better for the face and they move in faster, says Schiller.
