The federal energy regulator CREG sees no urgency to suddenly change energy contracts. The regulator thus responds to calls – including price comparators – to revise urgent energy contracts. People with a permanent contract do get the council to do the CREG scan.
In May the prices of both fixed and variable electricity and natural gax products will fall further, by around 5 percent for electricity and 12 percent for earth axis. Price comparators note that it is the time to revise energy contracts.
But the CREG notes that about 70 percent of households have a running variable contract. « They automatically enjoy the falling prices. They don’t have to do anything. »
According to the watchdog, there is « no urgency » to suddenly change the contract. « It is made that it is now or never, but first look at what you have. There is no urgency, » says spokeswoman Annemarie de Vreese.
Anyone who has an ongoing permanent contract, concluded in 2023 and 2024, takes best action. « They best do the CREG scan and can consider a change in contract, » the CREG advises.
The regulator still points out that fixed natural gas contracts around 23 percent or 185 euros per year remain more expensive than the variable variants. For electricity, the difference is around 22 percent or 115 euros on an annual basis. Within the range of variable energy contracts, considerable price differences remain, from around 300 euros to 400 euros on an annual basis. With the fixed offer, the price differences of around 250 euros for electricity to even 500 euros go for natural gas.
