End with rotten fruits: Coop launches new ‘food spill ball’
Unfortunately, it happens too often in Denmark that food ends up in the trash instead of in the stomach.
According to the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, private households throw out 235,000 tonnes of food every year, which is almost 30 percent of the total food waste in Denmark. And fruit and vegetables make up up to 25 percent of food waste in the home.
It informs Coop Denmark in one press release.
A new product is on the way
But now Coop presents a food waste solution that extends the shelf life of fruit and vegetables. The product is called Wrappy, and it consists of a small ball that you put near your fruit and vegetables.
The ball contains a bag that absorbs the ethylene gas that causes fruits and vegetables to ripen and decay. Thus, the maturation speed is lowered and the durability of the goods is extended.
The method is already used in the industry on fruit and vegetables and during the transport of fruit and vegetables – also to organic products. But Coop now makes the food waste solution available to Danish consumers.
Wrappy has just been launched in all Coop’s stores, and it pleases Thomas Roland, Head of Goods for Goods and Quality in Coop, for many customers demand advice and tools to limit food waste. He says:
« When we ask consumers what challenges the retail industry should get better at solving, then food waste is at the top. And I understand that well, because food waste is a big problem for society and for climate. Therefore, we also do a lot in Coop to minimize food waste in our stores. But many consumers would also like to do more to reduce their own food waste, and here the food waste can make a difference in everyday life. »
Thomas Roland also highlights the financial advantage that can be associated with a product like Wrappy in many households. For food waste is expensive. But if you can make your food extend longer, it is good news for the household budget.
