Emeritus King of Spain files a complaint against historical politician by injury
The Emeritus King of Spain filed an unprecedented complaint against a former president of the regional government of Cantabria for “injurious statements” made over the years. Juan Carlos I asks 50 thousand euros to compensate for “moral damage”.
Juan Carlos de Borbón, 87, abdicated the Spanish state leadership in 2014 and has lived abroad in Abu Dhabi since 2020. The monarch has left Spain due to controversial relations, behaviors considered disrespectful to national institutions and suspected of corruption and tax fraud.
This week filed a complaint in court, in a Cantabria Court, in the north of the country, against Miguel Ángel Revilla, 82, president of the autonomic government of that region between 2003 and 2011 and between 2015 and 2023.
According to a statement issued by the lawyers who represent him, Juan Carlos Borbón, who was King Juan Carlos I of Spain between 1975 and 2014, asks for 50,000 euros to revilla for statements in various media between May 2022 and January 2025.
Lawyers say Revilla « slanderously slandered » Juan Carlos de Borbón and referred to the former monarch with « injurious, defamatory, and therobious expressions that injure his fundamental right to honor. »
In addition to the 50,000 euros (which lawyers guarantee that they will be delivered to the Spanish Caritas), King Emeritus asks the Revilla to rectify the statements in the same media.
At a press conference, Revilla, a regional politician known for his little-contained way and frequent presence in national television programs, acknowledged on Wednesday that he was “very hard” in several public considerations about Juan Carlos I.
However, he assured that he does not regret and stressed that he has said the same as many Spaniards -if not even most -including other public figures.
Juan Carlos de Borbón is still part of the Spanish royal family, but the Royal House released a message that stresses that the complaint against Revilla was “a personal initiative” of the former monarch, who did not consult the institution or family on the subject.
