Elias Rosell: Israel’s crime against humanity must have consequences

« Yes. What is happening now is genocide, » says Melanie O’Brien, chairman of Iags, an international organization for genocide researchers, about Israel’s warfare in Gaza (TT 2/6)

An independent UN investigation has stated that Israeli forces have committed crimes against humanity and war crimes. More specifically, the accusation is about crimes against humanity about Israel intentionally attacking medical personnel and medical facilities. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has mentioned ”Ethnic cleansing“When he talked about Israel’s plans in Gaza.

The accusation of genocide is to be tried in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. But the outside world does not have to wait for any verdicts to act.

The country must not let its, rightly, bad conscience over the Holocaust, that it remains passive when Israel commits what may be genocide.

When a country acts as Israel now does against the civilian population in Gaza, the EU cannot continue to act as if nothing has happened. The least European Union should do is terminate the trade part of the association agreement with Israel. Because approx 30 percent From Israel’s exports go to the EU, the abolition of customs freedom would not only be a symbolic measure – it would feel properly.

It is good that the EU should now review if Israel has lived up to the letters in the association agreement on respect for human rights – something that does not have to take long.

The EU must not bury the issue in a long investigation when people in Gaza are buried daily.

Furthermore, EU countries such as Germany should pause its arms exports to Israel – Something there are signals about will happen. The country must not let its, rightly, bad conscience over the Holocaust, that it remains passive when Israel commits what may be genocide. German weapons would make much greater benefit in Ukraine’s hands.

But Sweden also has reasons to be self -critical. Government should listen to Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children, Sida’s Humanitarian Department with several and resume support for Unrwa.

Gaza’s population must receive food and safety.
