Election to the Sami Parliament – the question that splits

In the 2021 election, the hunting and fishing collections became the largest party, with just over 37 percent of the vote. According to a Novus survey from April, the party looks to be the biggest this time as well- according to it, more than four out of ten would vote on the hunting and fishing collections.

One of the big questions in this year’s election concerns the conflict about who is allowed to belong to a Sami village, where the Hunting and Fishing Samas and the largest opposition party, the Sami Party, find completely different.

If the hunting and fishing collections again manage to form a majority, Chairman Håkan Jonsson wants to push through a law change about who is allowed to belong to a Sami village. Jonsson has described the question for TT as « a knife that cuts straight through » the Sami Parliament.

The Sami Parliament is both a people -elected body with the task of promoting issues related to Sami culture and a state authority with administrative tasks. The elected assembly, called plenary, consists of 31 members. Elections have been held every four years since 1993.

The authority also works with issues related to Sami land use, community planning, reindeer husbandry, wildlife conservation, environment, climate and biodiversity.

The polling stations are open at 08-20 and you can vote in any polling station. If you cannot get to a polling station, you can still vote. The County Administrative Board Norrbotten begins the voting a week after Election Day and the result is expected to be completed by May 28.
