EKA: Existing the probability of a tsunami between Santorini and Amorgos
'The probability of a tsunami manifestation in the wider area Santorini – Amorgos is existing and is not limited to seismic activity, « the NCSR said. « Inland and underwater landslides can also cause devastating waves, making the preparation and information of the population absolutely necessary. In addition, the risk of tsunami is not only linked to the recent increase in seismic activity, but is a constant threat to the region, « he points out.
As he points out in a country with high seismicity, such as Greece, the existence of a well -organized plan of evacuation, clear directives and continuous education of the population is vital. The manifestation of a tsunami can be unpredictable, which necessitates the adoption of coordinated prevention and readiness actions.
A group of the Department of Geology and Geoenvods of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, consisting of the Ministry of Finance. Dr. Gogo Marilia, Minister. Dr. Spyrou Nafsika-Ioanna, Dr. Mavrouli Spyridon, Professor Evelpidou Niki, Professor Efthimi Lekka and Professor Antonarakos Asimina, conducted a detailed mapping of the areas that may be affected by a tsunami and evaluated the suitability of existing gathering points.
The first findings of the study
The first findings of the study show:
- Some suggested refuge points, such as in the Catapola of Amorgos, are strategically positioned, providing good tsunami protection. Correspondingly, the choice of location in the Aegiali area is considered satisfactory.
- In Santorini, the refuge points are set at long distances from the coast (for example, the southeast rally located 3,100 m from the coast of the coastal settlement of Perivolos and 3,200 m from Perissa). Although this placement ensures protection from the effects of a tsunami, it does not facilitate immediate (pedestrian) access to an emergency discharge.
- In Ios, the only concentration point that serves the port area (open space gold coast) is located in the zone that is flooded with even the milder scenario (0-3 m run-up), which makes it inappropriate.
- In Naxos, many of the indicated concentration points are located in the red zone. In addition, due to the density of the residential web of Naxos, it is necessary to update the concentration points and the design of the access routes to them.
The map that follows with selected areas of the Cyclades reflects the correlation of vulnerable zones in the impact of tsunami with the positions of the concentration points indicated by local municipalities. The areas marked in red are the most vulnerable and it is not appropriate to place concentration points.

Additional measures are required
Following international practices for the evacuation of coastal zones in the event of a tsunami, it is clear that additional measures are required to inform and raise the awareness of the population, the announcement is said.
To reduce the risk of tsunami, the NCSR proposes:
- Revision and updating, where necessary, of refuge and concentration.
- Determination of evacuation areas.
- Drawing and marking of evacuation routes.
- Enhancing the information and training of residents and visitors.
- Conducting preparedness exercises with the participation of citizens, local and regional bodies.
- Continuous scientific monitoring of the seismic and geodynamic activity of the area, as well as strengthening the tsunami early warning network and system.
