Education trade unions oppose Debt Loon Indexation and Requirements Consultation: “Holling of a remuneration package”

The ACOD, COC, COV and VSOA Education Bonds demanded social consultation on Monday about the postponement of the wage indexation for teachers on Monday. The trade unions certainly oppose the measure. « The index is not a technical parameter, but an essential protection against inflation. »

At the beginning of May, the Flemish Government, following the federal level, announced that the wages of officials would not be indexed until the third month after exceeding the pivot index. In the previous scheme that was still in the second month after the exceedance. Prime Minister Bart De Wever (N-VA) made it clear on Sunday in an interview with the public broadcaster VRT again that the new regulation will also apply to teachers. That harmonization, the prime minister said, « doesn’t seem to me the end of the world. »

However, the trade unions are not set up with the new measures. They demand social consultation and want no additional loss of purchasing for people in education. « We want guarantees that this saving will not end up on teachers’ back, » they write in a common announcement on Monday. « This index delay comes on top of previous measures that the remuneration package of educational staff run. Think of drastic interventions in the pension scheme, which we regard as a delayed wage – and therefore an integral part of the total salary. »

New action

It has been clear for some time that the trade unions resist the delay. Jan van Wesemael, general secretary at the socialist trade union ACOD Education, previously called the decision at Belga « purchasing power theft ».

« The Flemish level itself determines whether she wants to implement that measure, » Van Wesemael told Belga on Monday. « De Wever has not to interfere with that at all. » According to Van Wesemael, the wage indexation is still discussed in the next sector committee.

The socialist trade union ABVV also announced a new action against federal policy on Monday morning. There are several action days on the agenda in both May and June. But according to Prime Minister De Wever, they will not put a fool. He told VRT NWS on Sunday that his policy will remain unchanged anyway. « Save the trouble, » it sounded. The prime minister remains open for social consultation.
