Eating from a former locomotive shed: the « Kantin » in Dudelingen

Eating from a former locomotive shed: the « Kantin » in Dudelingen

There are probably not many restaurants that can say that where the kitchen is today or the tables are standing, previously locomotives stood. The « Kantin » in Dudelingen can do that. The restaurant is located in the emerging district of Neischmelz, between the industrial wasteland and the new residential area, which is to be built here.

When we enter the location, we are thrilled. The huge hall was renovated, but its industrial character with the large window openings, the brick walls and the steel frame has been preserved and makes it an extraordinary place.

As expected, it is quite full for a Saturday evening. We sit at a standing table with bar stools. Next to us is a small stage on which a musician is right. There is always live music on Saturday evening. The optical eye -catcher and the center of the restaurant is not the stage, but the long counter. There are signs with the different beers that can be tried here. Many of them come from the in -house small brewery « Twisted Cat ».

My companion tries the Twisted Cat Pacific Session IPA and is convinced. It tastes less bitter than other India Pale Ales, but the tropical aromas of passion fruit and citrus fruits come into their own. For me there is an alcohol -free Negroni that, like his counterpart, captivates with alcohol with his bittersweet taste.

As a starter, we order « Cauliflower Power » (11 euros), which are breaded cauliflower loses with BBQ sauce. In terms of taste, they definitely reminded of chicken wings. Otherwise there are still chicken wings, onion rings, hummus with flatbread or Brussels sprouts with pepper and ginger. For the very hungry, there is an entire starter tower with a colorful mix of starters.

Then comes the main course. I had the fresh Taglioni noodles with Brussels sprouts, edamame, leek and candied lemon. The price is very high at 22 euros for the comparatively small portion. I did not find it quite suitable that Italian with Asian flavors were combined with Asian flavors. In addition, there was no salt and a real sauce, which is why the dish gave too little taste.

My companion had the « Big V Mac », a vegetarian burger consisting of a oat lens paty, grilled zucchini, sweet potato and brioche. There were crispy fries. The bratling was delicious, but if you are looking for a fleshy alternative, you will not find it here. In addition, the rather sweet brioche bread did not fit so well to the dish. Perhaps an alternative from sourdough or multiple grain bread would have been better. The whole thing cost 17 euros, which is okay because you get full of it.

It should be emphasized that there is no poor selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes overall. In addition to a Buddha bowl with pasta, vegetables and chickpeas, there is also a broccoli steak with a white bean puree. There are also several vegetarian and a vegan tarte flambee. As it should be for a brewery, there are also hearty dishes such as Fish & Chips, Judd Mat Gaardebounten or a Cordon Bleu with fries.

At the end there was a dessert for both of us, the « Choko Maltesers », a kind of vegan mousse au chocolat (10 euros). The mousse was refined with a lot of peanut butter, which is reminiscent of Snickers in terms of taste. The taste is good, but the consistency is a little too firm.

Our conclusion is mixed. Due to the beautiful location and the large selection of dishes, we would come back and try out a few other dishes or simply enjoy a few drinks with live music.
