The police court in East and West Flanders will limit the duration of the sessions from Monday. In practice, only urgent matters such as fatal accidents and driving will be treated under the influence. In their press release, the peace courts and police courts point to several structural problems within the judiciary.

The public prosecutors of East and West Flanders and the Ghent Labor Auditorate previously announced that from 5 May they will ask the police judges in most files. The police courts join that action and will limit the duration of the sessions. Most things will therefore be postponed. Files around fatal accidents, driving under the influence, distraction behind the wheel and heavy speeding violations will still be treated. The same applies to cases in which the police judge must judge the physical or mental unsuitability of the defendant. Any other urgent files can also be argued.
« Like other forces within the magistrate, the police court want to express their concern about the way in which the functioning of the judiciary is systematically eroded, » it sounds in a press release on Saturday. It is emphasized that it is not just the planned pension reform. For example, the poor condition of the court buildings, the workload and the non-performance of the prison sentences are being raised. « The police courts are taking this action to defend the interests of the citizen, court staff and the rule of law. Our assignment and engagement are clear: speaking in all independence, for every citizen, every day again. »
