Earthquake in Rhodes: Highly noticeable and duration of the earthquake – what does Lekkas say

Particularly felt the strong submarine was made earthquake which took place on Tuesday, June 3, off the coast of Rhodes. The earthquake of 5.8 Richter was lasting and upset the islanders.

The strong earthquake occurred at 02:17 in the morning in the maritime area between Rhodes and Turkey. According to the revised solution by the Geodynamic Institute, the focus of the earthquake was found 23 kilometers north of Rhodes and had a focal depth of 62 km.

Professor of Geology and President of the OASP Mr. Efthimios Lekkas, speaking Mega, appeared reassuring, stressing that his main characteristic was depth and consequently: « We will not have a rich post -seismic sequence, it was this main earthquake and no tsunami was caused. However, it was felt within a very large radius. « 

He stressed that « we are in no way concerned with these earthquakes » and explained that this one « was intense because of a depth of seeing a larger surface, but the seismic waves do not have the energy they should have to have damage to the surface ».

Felt and duration the earthquake

The earthquake was felt in addition to Rhodes in other islands of the Dodecanese but also in Turkey and specifically in Marmaris, Smyrna, Aydin and Antalya. Turkish sources refer to it respectively as the « earthquake off the marble » from the largest city affected.

The inhabitants of Rhodes took to the streets

In Rhodes the residents took to the streets. According to ERT, minor damage was caused without any injuries. Preventively, the island’s fire department carries out controls in various parts of the city with its vehicles.

South Aegean Regional Governor George Hatzimarkos stressed that the vibration was strong and many tourists on the island were terrified and came out of the hotels where they stayed.
