Anna Birna Almarsdóttir, professor at the University of Copenhagen, is the project manager of the campaign « Consciousness Awakening and Empowerment of Elderly People on the Use of Iphones » which Alma D. Möller, the Minister of Health, publicly launched on Monday. The campaign is user -focused with senior citizens in control and is a newcomer in Iceland. « All Icelanders have access to the project, » Anna Birna emphasizes.
« This is a awareness raising that should warn older people with dangers of hypnotics and therefore point out other solutions to sleep problems without drugs because they do not work particularly well and long, » but Anna Birna continues. She points out that in 2020, about 10% of Icelanders received one or more prescriptions for all hypnotics, while 2024 have received about 6% received one or more prescriptions for only the most common sleeping drugs and are not all counted. « By 2020, Icelanders used more than six times more hypnotics than Danes, which were the lowest Nordic countries. »
Hypnotics are one of the most overused drugs in Iceland and people are on the drugs for years without knowing that they have stopped working, according to Anna Birna.
