Durres, the right destination for relaxation vacation
Sunny time and the Wests were not the only thing that impressed me on my journey to this hot Balkan point, ”writes Sydney Evans in an article published in the British daily Express for our country.
In recent years, Albania has become a popular destination for British tourists, known for turquoise beaches and broken landscape that is perfect for those seeking to explore. In search of relaxing, sunny guaranteed breaks, I and some friends decided to reserve a trip to Durres last summer.
Never being in Albania before, I was looking forward to discovering why this small European country was such a popular destination for foreign holidaymakers. We chose Durres after only a few days left and the beautiful coastal city is only 45 minutes by car from the capital Tirana, where it is the country’s main international airport.
We stayed in a small, beautiful hotel, just a few minutes standing from the beach and temperatures scored below 28 degrees Celsius all the time we were there. Of course I would not describe the beach as quiet, as we visited it in July, which is considered the culmination of the tourist season in Albania.
However, it was extremely easy to find enough space on the beach and reserve the sunlights that were free, spending the day on the coast until the sun disappeared in the most incredible wests every night. What impressed me most was the hospitality and quality of the food. Dishes with newlyweds, spaghetti and risotto, crocodile pizza and Greek salads filled with fresh vegetables were the most delicious meal we have tried.
Located in the Balkan Peninsula, a neighbor with Greece and Montenegro, Albania has strong ties with Italy and this was undoubtedly present in the food and friendly hospitality we experienced. While Durres is great for a few days on the beach, with many nearby hotels and restaurants and with appropriate location thanks to the proximity to Tirana, the beaches in the south are definitely more picturesque. I will definitely return to Albania, but next time I will give myself more time to explore this region of the country and its spectacular beaches, Evans writes.
