Due to the earthquake in the sea near Chile, evacuated and Antarctic bases
Following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the Chilean coast at the Drake crossing crossing between Cape Horn and Antarctica at a depth of just 10 kilometers, a call for evacuation was announced due to a tsunami threat.
The Chilean Disaster Agency has said there is no damage to key infrastructure or injured people, but called for evacuations along the south coast due to a tsunami risk.
« We are calling for the evacuation of the coast across the Magajanes region, » Chile President Gabriel Boric wrote on X, adding that all state resources will be available to alleviate a possible blow.
Videos shared on social networks are seen people being evacuated peacefully, while sirens are heard in the background. Photographs have also been published showing parks and other evacuation zones full of students, workers and other residents of the remote Chilean Southern region.
Chilean hydrographic and oceanographic service estimated that the waves in the coming hours would reach Antarctica and then to the cities of the Chilean end south.
A representative at the Chilean Antarctic Institute told Reuters that the bases were being evacuated. According to local authorities, about 2,000 people have been evacuated.
He said it was establishing a state of alert, a warning related to smaller tsunami. NOAA said waves are expected in Antarctica from 0.3 to one meter, and in Chile waves of one to three meters.
