Truck driver Diego N. (35) will stay in jail for at least another month, the council chamber decided that on Friday. The man caused an accident on Sunday evening in which his daughter (2) was seriously injured. He drove under the influence of alcohol.
The accident happened on Sunday evening on the Houtlaan in Wijnegem. The 35-year-old trucker DN was on his way with his truck to drop his 2-year-old daughter Elisa with her mother in Malle. Afterwards he would continue to his work in Schoten, where he had to deliver a load of animal feed to a customer in the evening. For a still unknown reason, D. lost control of the steering wheel. His truck went through the central reservation, scamped a lighting pole and drove out a large tree.
That tree crushed the windshield of the cabin on the passenger side, where Elisa was. The girl was seriously injured. She was taken to the hospital in danger. Elisa had sustained a skull and a brain haemorrhage. The girl’s condition is still criticism, the doctors would like to wake her up.
After the accident, truck driver DN took a positive alcohol test. The investigating judge decided to maintain the trucker on suspicion of unintentional success and injuries in traffic. DN was locked up in prison and appeared before the council chamber on Friday, there his arrest was confirmed. He will therefore have to stay in jail for another month. « He regrets what happened, he never wanted this, » says his lawyer Thierry Goffart.
However, the trucker is not ready for his test piece, he was caught driving under the influence in the past. The last time was on January 20 of this year, when his driver’s license was immediately withdrawn for fifteen days. For that case he has to appear in Antwerp before the police court. DN is struggling with an alcohol addiction, his entourage is looking for a place where he can possibly kick off after his detention.
