Dramatic action of firefighters. The horse fell into a concrete septic tank
Although firefighters are accustomed to saving people and animals in various situations, interventions involving large farm animals are less and less likely. For members of the TSO who took part in the action, it was the first intervention of this type.
Difficult action of firefighters. The horse fell into the underground tank
The incident occurred on May 16 in the morning, exactly when the solemn celebration of the Fireman’s Day began in Strzyżów. At 9:30 the duty officer received a notification from Wysoka Strzyżowska. A horse fell into the underground reservoir on a private property. The animal was unable to get out on its own.
Two hosts of PSP Strzyżów and volunteers from OSP Wysoka Strzyżowska Górna and OSP Wysoka Strzyżowska Dolna were directed to the place.
After the emergency services arrived at the place, the situation turned out to be serious. The horse got stuck in a concrete tank for waste. Only the head and fragment of the animal’s neck protruded from the narrow hole. As the witnesses reported, the hatch into the tank was not properly secured. Under the weight of the horse, he collapsed inside.
The animal was extremely exhausted, panicked and fought for life. There was a real risk that he would hurt or someone in panic.
Rescue operation with an excavator and a hammer
Firefighters decided on a difficult and risky surgery. An excavator was called in, which made the undergrow under the tank. At the same time, firefighters with a pneumatic hammer began to upload a concrete structure. Earlier, some waste in it was pumped out of the tank.
The situation was hindered by the lack of specialized sedatives. Although the owner gave the horse an ad hoc remedy, he turned out to be ineffective – the young animal was stimulated by stress and adrenaline.
At a critical moment, one of the bridesmaids from OSP Wysoka Strzyżowska Górna, a privately experienced horse breeder came to the rescue. The man has been dealing with these animals for 40 years and knew how to calm them down. He covered his horse eyes and head with material, which helped limit the stimuli and calm the animal.
Thanks to this, excavators and firefighters could safely continue rescue activities.
The whole and healthy animal returned to the stable
After two hours of intensive work, a part of the concrete structure was broken down and bringing the animal to the surface. A veterinarian also arrived, who thoroughly examined the horse.
As the firefighters informed, the horse was not injured and after a moment of rest was taken to the stable.
– This is the first such action regarding the saving of the pet of such a large size. Sometimes we go to a hunting game, such as a roe deer, which will hang on the fence. To save the horse I do not remember that we would leave someday, although it is understandable, because these animals are much less than it used to be – said Capt. Krystian Pająk from PSP Strzyżów.
