Don’t wait for NATO Summit to ensure investment in defense / day

As the President’s Adviser Martins Dreger informed LETA, the Minister of Defense informed the Defense Minister about a meeting of NATO Defense Ministers on Thursday.

The President and the Minister of Defense discussed the objectives of NATO’s capabilities approved at the meeting for the implementation of alliance defense plans, as well as the necessary defense funding and action in the fulfillment of these goals.

Rinkēvičs pointed out that the NATO Summit in the Hague was able to give a clear signal of significant investments in the discouraging and defense strengthening and the defense industry mobilization would be crucial.

« A single and strong transatlantic alliance is the best deterrent signal opposite Russia’s aggression, » the President noted, emphasizing Latvia’s priorities for the NATO Summit.

He also pointed out that Latvia’s responsibility was to fulfill its objectives on NATO. It is also in the interests of Latvia that all allies are performed.

The President emphasized that Latvia should purposefully fill its capabilities in the priority areas – landing forces, air defense capabilities, infrastructure development – and increase the human resources of the National Armed Forces.

Rinkēvičs emphasized the need to further explain the decisions already made to the Latvian public and the necessary steps to ensure the further steps to ensure interdisciplinary support for increasing funding in the defense budget.

It has already been reported that NATO has agreed on the largest armament program since the Cold War, sources close to the talks told DPA on Thursday. It provides for a significant increase in deterrence and defense capabilities in the coming years, as Russia still poses a serious threat to the military alliance.

The priority development directions identified by NATO are the creation of a combat -capable division, anti -aircraft defense, development of the Land Force Mechanized Infantry Brigade, Against Dyric Protection, and the Development of Allied Forces, LETA found out in the Ministry of Defense (MoD).

The MoD pointed out that the ministry had previously informed the Cabinet of Ministers about the priority development directions identified by NATO and the Cabinet has conceptually agreed that the Cabinet of Ministers plans to move to 5% of the GDP (GDP) with the Cabinet of Ministers.

Commenting that NATO has agreed on the largest armament program since the Cold War, Defense Minister Andris Sprūds (P) told LETA that it was a historic and important decision because of the progress of a specific and clear ambitious NATO.
