The press: Trump has been in office for over 50 days now. Have you already made a rhyme on what he aims at his foreign policy course, including the threats to Panama, Greenland and Canada?

Carlo Masala: So he does not want to expand the USA territorially. However, Trump looks at international politics such as the Russians and the Chinese in classic geostrategic dimensions. Where are raw materials that the United States need to become more independent? Where are critical points whose control gives the United States greater security? Example Greenland: The flight route of ballistic rockets that would fly from Russia to the United States leads over the Arctic. And if you have a radar early warning system in Greenland, this is an advantage. It is also about suppressing the Chinese and Russian influence. And Trump reaches what he wants with his threats. The Panama government has already said that military shipping would be excluded from the payments and that the cooperation with China hadn't brought what was hoped for. Ultimately, Trump wants a new world order.

What does this new order look like?

The USA, Russia and China divide the world into spheres of influence, some of them cooperate in the exploitation of raw materials, sometimes they are in competition with each other. Trump's understanding of politics is more like that of the 18th or 19th century than that of the 21st century. Partners only play a subordinate role if they do not fully subordinate themselves.

In European capitals, it is puzzled whether Trump is only indifferent or hostile to the continent. What do you think?

It's a mix. With a view to the economic strength of Europe, Trump is enthusiastic about Europeans. He would rather have a Europe in which the individual states bilaterally conclude their contracts with the United States because its influence would be greater. With a view to the security policy situation, Trump wants to get out of Europe because he wants to put full concentration on the Indopazacifik and China.

What does Trump want from Russia?

A deal that goes far beyond the Ukraine question.

What could such a deal look like?

We know what Putin wants: the reversal of the European security architecture on the 1997 state of 1997, i.e. the American troops should get out of Central Eastern Europe, from the Baltic States and also from Kosovo. And Trump once said that one also had to talk about the roots of the Ukraine conflict. From Putin's point of view, this root is NATO extension. So the deal could look like the Americans who want to go out of Europe anyway, end troop presence in the Baltic states, in Central and Eastern Europe and in Kosovo, so that one has a space between Russia and Germany again, to dominate Russia.
