Dominican Republic. Dozens of people died in the disco after the roof collapses
On Tuesday (April 8), the roof of the disco in the El Portal district in Santo Domingo collapsed early in the morning. According to « Bild », according to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred during the ongoing event at the Jet Set disco. Suddenly there was a loud crack, and then part of the ceiling collapsed. Panic broke out, the guests ran outside, others were trapped under the rubble.

Over 50 rescue vehicles appeared on the spot. « Bild » informs that the rescue operation lasted until late at night. Many relatives were desperate outside for information about their loved ones. Initially, it was reported that at least 15 people were killed under the rubble. However, the balance turns out to be even more tragic. – There are 44 deaths so far, according to preliminary data, we continue working – said Juan Manuel Mendez, director of the Crisis Operation Center, quoted by PAP. He added that 145 injured people were transported to hospitals. The previous report of the emergency services talked about 27 killed, among which was Nels Cruz, the governor of the province of Monte Cristi in the north of the country.
It is not known how many people were in the premises when the roof collapsed.
The reason for this construction disaster is still not clear. « Bild » reports that preliminary premises indicate structural defects or a club overflow. The prosecutor’s office is investigating and construction experts are investigating the building. The disco operator has also been questioned.
