Dojce Vele: Students return to the benches? – Society
Although students in Serbia do not give up the blockade, faculties by day by day, they make decisions about compensation. Opinions and among students and among the professors on that issue are different.
Confusion on the occasion of a sudden start of teaching, disappointment in the decisions of the professor and wait for the moves of the authorities. Thus, the answers of the students we discussed on now are increasingly the starting of classes in Serbia in Serbia, can be summarized.
Six months of their beginning, protests received political articulation. The students requested the announcement of the parliamentary elections and started the formation of the electoral list, transferring the « ball in the courtyard » of the authorities. And there they say – elections in the next year and a half. Maybe.
Academic community would say, there is so much time to wait. And while students in the Pioneering Park are threatening to strike if classes at all faculties are from 1. June, as the main question is what, it seems, is bothered by the faculty in the current situation and further point?
After support, « Knife in the Back »
« If things are just going to go normally, the great collective disappointment follows. »
This says one student of the Belgrade Faculty of Organizational Sciences (FON) for DW. Her faculty has recently started asynchronous model of compensation for teaching, ie. Publication of materials on online platforms.
FON is one in a series of faculties in Serbia, which began some form of compensation for teaching, and students noted that the sudden decision of the teaching-scientific council was found and disappointed.
The plenum of that faculty voted against any form of start-up, says DW one student. However, in the sign of solidarity and support to professors « , which are unlawfully not regular salaries, » a significant number of students wanted to support such a model of teaching. In the end, as he says, revoked by a decision noted without their knowledge, FON students voted against such a model.
That decision of the faculty, they say his colleagues, created distrust of students. « The Dean and the Faculty Management was allegedly on our side. Now no more trusts them, nor does it consider that we can find a joint solution, » FON’s student’s student talks.
Is it time to return to the benches?
And while many are wondering until they will avoid online teaching without consequences, and others say that « no one is tired », and from the ranks of student blockades, everything can be heard more often that it is time to return to the benches.
« All this takes too long. The biggest problem is that there is nothing uncertain. I am afraid that after this time, this is not the most adequate way of fighting, » he explains for DW Aleksandar, a student of the University of Belgrade.
« Are we needing changes? Yes, but is it even at the price of everything ‘falling’ and we have greater consequences than now? I don’t think so. »
Although the faculty blocks continue to see as the best way to perform pressure, and the FON student considers that without broader support for their victim is almost futile.
« Faculty’s blockade is the only remaining way in which students are affected by the authority. In order to come, all the ways, and the subjective feel is that the rest of society is not ready to provide appropriate support, » she says.
Different opinions and among professors
Despite the indignation of students who continue to block the faculty building, the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade (ECOF), with the consent of the Student Parliament, began online-teaching. Dekanka Zaklina Stojanovic points out for DW that « it had to be undertaken to save the school year ».
« I have to say that there are students who want to complete this school year for various reasons, which does not dim and demands that students in the blockade deliver, » Stojanovic explains.
She notes that the « unclear goal of the university blockade » and that it is a long run to a struggle that « has no basis to lead to some sustainability ».
« Essentially, bearing that students have highlighted the requirements of political nature, the teaching-scientific chamber decided not to support that the law of the Faculty, ie university, » said the Dean of EKOF.
On the other hand, Professor of FoN and the Freedom Party, Vladimir Obradovic believes that any decision was made without the consent of students in the blockade leading to the unity between professors, students and in the academic community in general. » He believes that his faculty had to act differently.
« The relationship of mutual trust was violated before making a decision on the reimbursement of teaching. The Faculty of Running. The Management of the Faculty that has not been disregarded. Now there is no dialogue, » Obradović will no longer exist for DW.
« Serbia is in a serious crisis and Vučić does not intend to solve it »
Analyzing the current social situation, a psychologist and professor in retired Zarko Korać for DW points out that this is a difficult time for protests, that both students and professors are under pressure, but that there is no impression that student energy has been « accumulated ».
« This whole strike has partly fell on professors, which for the fourth month they are not receiving a salary. They have to live and this is a difficult living for them. » Support online « , says Korać.
And while the students of the Traffic Faculty in Belgrade, with which we discussed, they want to continue their knowledge, « which is not worth the election, » said the new question – « What will be if Vučić does not want to announce the election at all? »
« Serbia is in a serious crisis and he does not intend to solve it, because he is to abolish the independence of the university. Nothing to keep independence and if I think it needs to be persistent, » Zarko Korać concludes in this.
