Sylvie VanOouslieven and her family are completely devastated by the loss of her dog Bento. He drowned in the Zenne during a walk on the Dorent in Eppegem. The family from Zemst warns of the life -threatening situation. « The path seems harmless, but it isn’t. »
« It was Thursday afternoon around 4 pm when I and my daughter Kirsten were walking with our two Golden Retrievers Bento and Balou, » says Sylvie. « We first went to the dog meadow and then returned along the hiking trail in the Dorent on the Senne in Eppegem. Bento and Balou were on a lead, we each held one leash. »
« Bento slipped unexpectedly off the path, directly into the water. Between the path and the water there is no definition, and it immediately becomes dangerous deep. We did everything to get it out. The liab cut in our hands, the flow was way too strong. In the end we got Bento out of it. That was very difficult with that strong stream, moreover our Bento weighs.” ”
Temperature difference
« His tongue hung out of his mouth when we pulled him on dry land. I tried to resuscitate him mouth on mouth, but it was too late. Bento had died because of the large temperature difference. We were completely devastated. We had been attached in the meantime, so that it would not struggle in the water either. »
The family wants to warn everyone about the dangerous situation at the Dorent. « There is no definition between the path and the water, » sighs Sylvie. « The path seems harmless, but it is not. It is immediately dangerously deep towards the water and there is a very strong current. »

“We miss Bento enormously. We can get his body back and let him cremate. He will come back home. Our Balou is inconsolable. He misses Bento enormously. They were inseparable and also slept together. They also grew up together and are five years old. We are now with a double feeling. Balou is lonely now, but we have it. »
One thing is certain: the family will never again walk on the Dorent. « That is not emotionally and it is far too dangerous, » says Sylvie. « We are now going to walk closer to home in our own street. » We had taken the path on the Dorent because we were chased away by a rider on the bridle path. But we always keep our dogs short, they don’t hurt anyone. With this warning about the dangerous situation, I hope that other dog owners will be saved from this terrible suffering. ”
