If you are struggling to fall asleep in the evening, or if the mindset and inner turmoil tighten your legs for your night’s sleep, then you are far from alone. Sleep problems have become a common disease, and many Danes are also experiencing increasing stress levels in everyday life.

But maybe the solution is surprisingly straightforward.

Dr. Myro Figure, an anesthetist from California and a member of the American Board of Anesthesiology, has recently shared a video on Instagram in which he reveals the only dietary supplement he personally recommends. Namely, magnesium glycinate.

The video has already been viewed over 900,000 times. And then it’s not even hard to understand why.

According to Dr. Figure is not just a sleep supplement, but an all-round aid for both sleep, anxiety and the absorption of vitamin D. Magnesium is necessary for a wide range of functions in the body, and many of us do not get enough of it in everyday life. In the video he says, « If I only had to recommend one supplement, then it is magnesium glycinate. » And there is good reason for that.

Magnesium contributes, among other things, to attenuating the body’s production of cortisol – also known as the stress hormone – and at the same time helps the body form melatonin that we need to fall asleep. The special variant, magnesium glycinate, is easier for the body to absorb and more gentle on the stomach than other types.

Dr. Figure also refers to studies pointing to a possible correlation between magnesium and lower anxiety levels. In addition, he emphasizes that magnesium is necessary for the body to utilize vitamin D effectively at all.

The National Board of Health recommends that adults get 280 mg of magnesium a day for women and 350 mg for men. Magnesium can be found in foods such as whole grains, green vegetables, nuts and dark chocolate, but many also choose to take it as a supplement.
