When she was tired of the unkind green weeds between the tiles on the terrace, a British woman tried a viral tiktok trick that only makes use of salt and water – and claims that the cheap trick ‘suffocates the’ weeds.

Now she encourages others to look in the kitchen cabinet before spending money on expensive weeds.

The Tiktok trick was shared by Dr. Janine Bowring and has taken the internet by storm as it promises to eradicate stubborn weeds between tiles and driveways using a cheap household – namely salt.

The method is about mixing one part of salt with two parts of water and pouring it directly on the weeds. Some of those who have tried the trick have even claimed that their weeds have not grown back since then.

Garden expert Harry Bodell supports the method and explains that the saline solution dries and destroys the weeds all the way down to the roots. However, he also warns that one must not exaggerate as it can destroy the soil permanently.

« This method works by drying the weeds. Salt disturbs the plant’s ability to absorb important nutrients such as potassium, magnesium and calcium. The disturbance in the nutrient absorption weakens the health of the plant, causing it to dry out and die, » he says, according to The Sun.

« Salt stops the weeds from growing further. There are certain ions in salt that can be harmful to plants. When they accumulate at high concentrations, the natural processes like photosynthesis and cause cell damage and dehydration. »

« Once you have mixed your saline solution, gently pour it into the cracks between the tiles – especially in places where weeds are already sticking up. It is important to do it on a particularly dry day so that humidity and rain do not rinse the solution away. »

« Over night, the solution will dry out the plant down to the root, so the weeds are easy to remove the next day, » he rounds off.

And the best thing about it all is that you can buy salt at a low price in any Danish supermarket, so this trick is not exactly going to blow the budget. A large number of Tiktok users also expressed to be speechless about the results.

« I can’t believe it, but it really works, » wrote one user while another added, « I’ve used it in my entire garden and it seemed amazing. »

« I do it once a year, and then the weeds will only come back in the winter, » wrote a third.
