Environmental impact assessment of Eastern Ring Road

The study is included in the environmental impact assessment that Sund & Bælt is conducting in these years of Eastern Ringvej, which is a tunnel off Amager’s east coast, which can connect Nordhavn in the north with the Øresund motorway in the south. In total, the divers must examine 143 different objects and areas, geophysical studies and a review of different archives have shown that there may be cultural -historical objects.

Initially, the area was investigated by means of scans and sonar, and in this way they found in the first place up to 244 objects to be examined more closely. These have been looked at with the help of an underwater drone, and in this way it was initially possible for the museum to cut the list down to the 143 items that are now being examined manually.

« The technology has gradually become so good that we can quickly get an overview of the seabed, but on the scans we cannot see if, for example, it is a bottom yarn pole or a ship’s side”, says Andreas Kallmeyer Bloch.

More wrecks in the water

The largest sea battle in Danish history, the battle of the nest, was just fought in the waters around Copenhagen in 1801, and therefore over the years several historic shipwrecks have been found along the east coast of Amager.

« The area has a special archaeological attention because the alignment for the possible tunnel is located where Danish ships were laid up as block ships to defend themselves during the battle of the nest. In addition, in the Middle Ages there has been a lot of sailing to and from Copenhagen, » says Andreas Kallmeyer Bloch.

For Sund & Bælt, the marine archaeological studies are about creating an overview of the historical area, so that you have the best conditions for making a well -known decision on the project and organizing the possible further work with an eastern ring road.

« We know that the project area for Eastern Ringvej is an area where there is a high likelihood of finding archaeological interest. Therefore, we have chosen to do a thorough study now, so we have the best overview and the best conditions for providing an informed decision basis and taking into account findings in a possible construction phase, » says Christina Berlin Hovmand, Environment and Authority Director at Sund & Belt.

The environmental impact assessment is expected to be completed by 2026, after which it is up to the Folketing to decide whether to construct.
