Distance learning only in high school? / Day

Nearly 12,000 students study distance learning, of which 3,500 are based on a basic level (grades 1-9). Not only the number of pupils, but also the state funding allocated to this area is increasing. In 2022 it was 4.8 million euros, reaching EUR 11.3 million in 2024 (salaries and teaching aids for teachers). At the same time, the results of centralized exams for pupils who have acquired knowledge in distance learning are lower than the average in the country, which calls into question the quality of education of such a format. The Saeima's responsible commission is encouraged by the draft law to be abandoned within three years at the elementary school phase.

The Ministry supports amendments

The draft law drafted by the Saeima Commission stipulates that distance learning will only be able to acquire knowledge in 10-12. In class, while pre -school and basic education programs only in person. It is encouraged to give up the form of part -time, but those who began their studies in it will be able to complete them. The document also stipulates as far as educators will be able to use combined solutions (remote training, online, technology application) – they should not exceed 20% of the total lesson load per year.

Kristine Niedre-Lathere, Deputy State Secretary for General Education and State Language, emphasized that the Ministry supports such amendments to the law, including recommendations regarding combined training and the restrictions on the age. However, it is definitely necessary to agree on exceptions that would be allowed, for example, in this format, basic education could be obtained by adults who have not done so for some reason.
