Will Smith

« Based on a True Story »

(Rave in the Wasteland)

Everyone knows the story of what happened at the Oscars gala in 2022. When comedian Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith stormed her husband up on stage and gave him an ear file. It was a raw sof that not only shook the room but the entire industry. Will Smith’s first album in 20 years appropriately is released enough for the three -year anniversary of the entertainment history event.

In accordance with the generally shameless social climate, « based on a true story » is to a very small extent a humble apology. Rather, the album is an angry and wounded defense figure, addressed to anyone who turned his back on the events at and around the Oscars. No recognition of guilt, just a childishly acidic cake against the doubters.

Smith more often about That he received « punches » than he handed out a few, which echoes empty when basically everyone with a pulse has seen the proof of the opposite. He often wobbles between preaching superficial self -examination and giving loud insurance that he would never « bow down to a lesser man ».

The record also contains its fair share of election -handed attempts at banged revenge bangers. This from a rapper whose foremost, perhaps only, benefits towards his competitors has been the boyish charm and the soft child -friendly pop rush. He does not come around the discrepancy between his Björn Skifs qualities as an entertainer, and clumsy text lines about « haters ». No matter how much he gaps that he is an « outlaw » or names a song for « Rave in the Wasteland ».

It is an album that very much wants to be important, but in fact it is just the more lightweight it is. Poppy trifle « Hard Times (Smil) » and gospel -like « You can make it » easily beats all more seriously and played tough songs.

Will Smith, like all other artists and people, of course has the right to develop. But the confession he makes at « Based on a True Story » he is not close to bottoming out.
