Lido Pimient

« La Belleza »

(Anti/Playground)

When everything you give out, regardless of genre, is adapted to the « World Music Union », you can just as well do the last thing anyone expects from a Caribbean woman. So the Colombian-Canadian artist Lido Pimiena reasoned his breakthrough with the last album « Miss Colombia ». So far, she has mainly been associated with Latino -influenced Electronica, but during the pandemic, the idea of recording the new album « La Belleza » was aroused with choir and symphony orchestra.

If the word were less infected, one could describe the sound in terms of reverse appropriation. Pimiena uses the European classical music tradition as a means of conveying personal experiences with political undertones. It will be a concentrated piece of colonial history transformed into sounds that absorb and embrace a split cultural heritage. In addition, just as seductive as imaginatively instrumented in collaboration with producer Owen Pallett.

The music may sound powerful Like Carl Orff’s thundering choir « Carmina Burana » or softly rolling like Ravel’s Spanish -colored « Bolero » – to take two possible role models. She herself mentions film music by Czech Luboš Fišer and Gregorian song. Nevertheless, the alloy, with elements of Latin American rhythms and Pimienta’s brass voice in the center, appears entirely own. Just peeled « mango » becomes well -intrusive vocally with the voice completely in the foreground.

The tone is often both sad and light at the same time. As in the powerful « Ahora », where she has stuck to her roots in the indigenous people Wayuu. Or « Busca la Luz » which literally trumps out the message: « Long live a free Caribbean ». With nine tracks – or batches – Pimienta’s barely half -hour suite also stands out at a time when more and more artists wipes out excessively long albums with sketchy filling material. « La Belleza » – « Beauty » in Spanish – is a real little gem for wide -sighted fans of both pop and classic.

Best track: « Ahora », « Quiero Que Me Beses »
