The 25-year-old driver of the Mercedes who was involved in the fatal accident in Elversele in March, drove under the influence of alcohol and drugs. That confirms the public prosecutor of East Flanders. Two sisters-in-law from Sint-Niklaas and the sisters Malak (5) and Mila (1) who were in the small BMW died on the spot.

The accident happened in the night of 20 to 21 March, just before the tunnel on the Duivenhoek in Elversele. The driver of a Mercedes van rode in front of a small BMW. The toll of the heavy blow was extremely heavy.

The four passengers of the BMW all died on the spot. It concerned two sisters-in-law of 24 and 26 years old from Sint-Niklaas and the two children aged 5 and 1 years from the 26-year-old woman.

BM (25), a carpenter from Kruibeke and the driver of the Mercedes, was seriously injured. According to his lawyer, he ran a blow, broken ribs and a concussion. At the start there were already strong suspicions that the man was driving too fast, but M. was released under certain conditions. « The decision of the investigating judge is incomprehensible and a blow in our face, » it sounded to the family.

« We don’t know how things are going to be so wrong. It is currently guessing for us, » said his lawyer, who did not want to make a statement or he was driving under the influence. « He just doesn’t remember, » said the counsel.

The public prosecutor’s office now comes with the news that the man was indeed under the influence. He tested positively on alcohol and drugs. (PVS)
