Director of the Drama resigned due to divergence with part of the collective

Vesna Jurca Tadel as we announced, resigned from the head of the director of the Ljubljana Drama. She announced her resignation last week in the Workers’ Council, where they presented the results of the SNG Drama Ljubljana employee satisfaction survey and their satisfaction with the process of moving. Today, she confirmed that the resignation is the result of excessive differences within the collective.

“I took over the management of this theater during exceptional challenges – after the pandemic, in the midst of the exhaustion of the collective, before the start of the complete renovation of the building and with the financial cuts that marked everyday operation. From the very beginning, I followed a clearly outlined artistic and programmatic vision, based on the mission of Drama, which I already presented in the application for a call and upgraded it to the institute’s strategic plan, « Vesna Jurca Tadel said today.

“I believed – and I still believe – that the drama deserves a program that respects its identity, builds a repertoire on quality texts and, in collaboration with the most prominent creators, raises relevant, current social issues. I am convinced that the drama must open new topics, set the highest aesthetic standards over and over, and at the same time it must be firmly rooted in the tradition of Slovenian culture, enlightenment breadth, global humanism and commitment to the dignity of the individual. « 

Differences with part of the collective too deep

But, as he adds, « artistic direction is also based on trust and co -creation with the ensemble. Recently, differences in the vision have become too deep between me and part of the collective, so that it would be possible to continue to plan the future together.

So I decided to resign. Drama is not just a building, a program or staffing – it is a community. And if the community cannot be linked around common values ​​and goals, it is only responsible for me to withdraw, ”she explained.

“I have made very difficult decisions with all the responsibility – whether it be a repertoire, associates, relocation or crisis management. I am proud of being When moving to alternate spaces We kept the collective in one place and that our creation could be virtually unspoiled, as we finished one season in old rooms and started the other in a new location in time. And I am proud that despite all the challenges due to moving, we have preserved the audience, that the halls are filling up more and more and that our performances arouse response, reflection, including enthusiasm. For me, this is proof that I have successfully found topics that are disturbing, attracting stories and the fates of drama persons who call for reflection, « she wrote.
