Dignity in old age is not just on money
The older generation is often pushed to the edge of society and unfounded as a social expense, instead of taking advantage of its potential, including the transfer of invaluable knowledge and values to the younger generations, based on experience and good practices, is a fundamental message of the consultation Dignity in old agewho was in the National Council yesterday.
The purpose of the consultation, organized by the Commission of the National Council for Social Welfare, Work, Health and Disabled Persons, the Social Chamber of Slovenia and the University of Alma Mater Europaea, is to draw attention to the need for a more respectful attitude towards the older population, which feels that in our society it is not sufficiently appreciated and properly protected from the point of view of providing individual rights and access to public service services.
Personal dignity is a fundamental respect and recognition of the value of individuals in society, regardless of gender, age, physical or social status, recalled prof. ddr. Mara Ovsenik MaraPresident of the Board of Directors of the Social Chamber of Slovenia, at the conference Dignity of Age, which was in the National Council yesterday.
Reality, however, is quite different from declarative principles. Unfortunately, there is a lot of social exclusion, abuse and violence, both physical, psychological and economic, the discussants noted. Many have poor experience with access to public services. The system of protection of the elderly faces a lack of staff, employee overload and limited financial resources. However, the relevant staff standards and nursing norms are still not accepted.
