He was the World Champion in the Supervels from 18 June 1965 to 25. June 1966 for WBA and WBC. In the medium -heavy category, he was the world champion from 17, 1967 to 29. June 1967 for WBA and WBC. He won the title again on March 4, 1968 and kept it until 7 November 1970. In 1968 he was appointed boxer of the year and ended his professional career three years later. Of a total of 90 career matches, he recorded 82 victories (35 wins with a knockout), seven defeats and one draw.

He also starred in some films. In 1964 he entered politics, as a right -handed party in the party of Movimento Social Italiano – Destra Nazionale, but soon retreated from it. In 1996, he also entered the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

In 2001 he published a book Il Mondo and Pugno (The world in the fist). In 2020 she was published in collaboration with Mauro Grimaldi book Nino Benvenuti, Il Mio Esoda Dall’isistria (Nino Benvenuti, My Exodus from Istria). Before that, he wrote a book in collaboration with the same author L’isola che non c’è: il mio esodo dall’isistria (Izola, which is not; my exodus from Istria).
