According to Diana Kharlamova, it’s not enough to write a book. It is probably even more difficult to publish it and sell it. Photo: Elizabeth Gross

The journalist Rus.postimees Diana Kharlamova published her debut story “Interview”. The presentation of the book and the autograph session took place on March 7 in the Narvsky Alex Kohvik. The book was published in a small circulation – only 200 copies, but is also available in electronic format. You can purchase it at the stores of the Rahva Raamat chain.

The Estonian book market for authors writing in Russian is a complex matter. The story “Interview” is a two -part story, the action of which unfolds in Tallinn, in the center of the plot a journalist of the publication “Yesterday and Today” Dina Post. After her mother tragically dies in a car accident, Dina begins to suspect that this could not be an accident.

“In fact, a similar story happened to me in Tallinn – a friend turned to me with a request to help clarify the details of one accident, as she suspected the evil game. In reality, no detective happened, but the thought of writing a book with such a plot was firmly settled in my head, ”says Diana Kharlamova.

Work on the book took about two years, and when it was actually written, Diana doubted that she could publish it. “Doubts rolled constantly-whether it is necessary for someone. But at the key moment I was supported by a close person. Probably, I just needed a push to gather and overcome doubts, ”the author argues.

It was possible to raise funds for the publication of the book using the Hooandja platform. “The collection was quite fast – the publication of the book is not cheap today, I also found a publishing house ready to work with me. Of course, my professional ties helped in this. Now the book saw the light, ”says Kharlamova.

Also, an autograph session was also held during the presentation, Diana signed dozens of books. Photo: Elizabeth Gross

The book perfectly describes the professional life of a modern Russian -speaking journalist. The names of publications and editions are changed, but quite guessed. The action takes place in Tallinn – interviews and reports replace each other in the life of the main character, while the main story arch – Dina's own investigation ends with a rather unexpected turn.

With the consent of the author “Narva Gazeta” publishes an excerpt of the text of the story “Interview”.

Fly

Fragment of the story « Interview »

We stuck in the meeting room. Suddenly rising wind howled in huge windows with terrible force. Eric Dunver sat at the head of the table and talked about the possible reasons for the readiness of the readiness “yesterday and today”.

Turning away from my papers, I looked around my colleagues. Ken sat bowing over the table, and scratched something enthusiastically in his molekin. His freshly painted bright pink hair burned me a retina, although he looked, of course, incredibly cool. Eve sat, looking at the face of our boss with an impenetrable gaze. Her face, beautiful, like a porcelain doll, had a slightly detached expression. From the side it might seem that she listened carefully to Eric, but I knew – the girl is absolutely on the drum. Eve planned the long-awaited trip to Berlin to finally visit Berthein. I looked at Ed. Of the whole bed, ED infuriated me the most. Etorous, already middle -aged man with a face, like a toad. His career on the TV channel recently ended for unknown reasons, so now he constantly flaunted in the office, trying to teach absolutely everyone, including Danver. He wrote good materials, but it would be better to write bad ones, maybe then he would have fired. Eve came up with the nickname « Gertrude » because Ed adored the novels of Gertrude Stein, and Ken and I really liked the nickname.

We had another reason to dislike Ed – he was the deputy Erica and in fact with her right hand. Ed constantly lying in front of the boss, which was striking to absolutely everyone.

I looked at Alice. She watched something in the working laptop. Alice was the oldest in our editorial office. None of us knew exactly how old she was, but this was not interested in anyone, because she was one of the most talented Russian -speaking journalists in Estonia. Alice was the reason why the magazine was well sponsored by lovers of exciting detective materials. The colleague loved to seek out political intrigues, scandals and deputies who, with state money, sniff cocaine from the abdomen of escort – such materials have always aroused a keen interest among readers. Eve and Ken and I often turned to her for advice that Ed did not like it very much, because he believed that only he was able to competently answer all questions.

Every week, someone from the editorial office had to go to Narva to illuminate the Festival of Lays or another scandal in self-government. None of us liked it, just as Narva did not like with its Soviet spirit, and among ourselves we christened this city with the “ghettho anncam of Russia”.

For the past year and a half, Alice spent in America, working for some publication in Massachusetts. But suddenly returned to Estonia. According to rumors, Erica begged Alice to come to work in « yesterday and today. » It seems that she even offered her a salary slightly higher than that of the rest of the employees. Everyone knew that Alice was worth her money.

Alice sat next to the boring Masha, who, unlike Eve, really listened to Eric. The Liimets brothers – the senior Victor and the younger Eric – whispered softly, and Alex thoughtfully twisted the tape of the phone. He had a third child more recently, and things were going well in his personal company, so we all perfectly understood: to Alex the ratings “yesterday and today” as a whole to the light bulb.

An incredibly sleepy mood reigned in the air. The meetings on Thursdays were of some kind of slurred character. Erica rushed us with still unprepared materials, assuring us that we, as always, were already late last year.

– Alex could gather and go, for example, to Narva. They are going to express a vote of mistrust to the mayor, we do not have a local correspondent, and fresh materials on this topic …

I squinted at Alex. He looked at Eric – his face did not express any emotions. Every week, someone from the editorial office had to go to Narva to illuminate the Festival of Lays or another scandal in self-government. None of us liked it, just as Narva did not like with its Soviet spirit, and among ourselves we christened this city with the “ghettho anncam of Russia”.

“No problem,” Alex nodded and again plunged into the world of his phone.

I looked at him sympathetically, but he did not notice it. I was looking forward to when the fly would end – I was extremely necessary to talk with Alice. Something, who was learned from yesterday's papers hooked my attention, and hardly anyone except her could give me good advice. Unless Eric, but I tried not to approach that without unnecessary need. As well as the rest of my colleagues. It was Erica was the One Who Knocks.

Danver slammed the laptop with the words “everyone is free” and, abruptly standing from the table, headed for the exit from the negotiator. The rest, yawning and stretching, began to slowly push the chairs slowly to crawl out after her, and then let in the kitchen after the next portion of poor coffee coffee coffee.

– Alice! I called out to a colleague who rushed after Danver.

She turned around and carefully looked at me with her big dark eyes. Alice's gaze was always so expressive that she could allow to speak without words.

– Listen, I need your help.
“Of course, my girl, but just give me first to drink coffee, okay?” Let's go.

Alice took me under the elbow with her free hand and led me towards her desktop. Passing by the kitchen, she took out two clean cups from the shelf. Alice always brought a big thermos with incredibly tasty coffee, which she cooked in the morning at home. Those whom she treated to this coffee was terribly lucky. Today I was once again lucky.

“Tell me,” the colleague allowed, pouring the drink into the cups.

I sat on a free chair and handed her printouts. It turned out to be quite difficult to find at least some information about the accident in which the mother died-a couple of standard notes with the date, time and weather conditions. The condolences of relatives and friends, damn them.

“I thought I could still try …” I mumbled.
Alice ran her eyes the first sheet and nodded in understanding.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” You know, it can be the work done in vain and this …
– Mother will not return me. I know. But I promised my sister, and I will feel disgusting if I do not fulfill a promise.
– Understand.
– What do you think, where to start?
“From the most important thing,” Alice sipped coffee. -If your mother tried to put someone very important or a friend of someone very important, or his son, kuma, holy …
“That's it,” I interrupted her. -According to the case file, my mother tried to plant a guy who was driving a drunk from the club and arranged an accident. Two people died in it.
“And his name …” Alice said, glancing on a piece of paper. – Laur Tammist.
– Exactly.
– Were the documents in the public domain?
– Yeah.

To my surprise, the leading publications, including ours, did not particularly illuminate this topic: despite the death of the two people of the culprit of the accident, for some reason, for some reason, they did not crucify the media on the cross …
