Detecting leaks from air with thermal cameras
« This is only part of what we are doing and we intend to improve even further – to provide preventive maintenance and prevent major damage and malfunctions, » says Brynja Ragnarsdóttir, director of services at Veitur.
For a while, the company has used drones with thermal cameras to fly through the streets and look for potential leaks in underground heat supply.
Helps to detect leaks before they cause damage
Brynja says that the leak search is one of the most important factors in the Veitur Veitures goal for preventive maintenance.
« We want to detect leaks before they expand and cause damage, » she says.
She adds that by finding a leak early, it is possible to prevent customers from suddenly sudden water loss.
Can prevent large actions
Brynja pipes often start to leak in colored quantities before being seen with the naked eye. Therefore, the drones come in handy to find the smaller leaks and as a result preventing major operations from being taken.
She also mentions that the leak search has found leaks on snowmelt systems in residents.
« It is a natural part of our service to inform the residents so that it can be responded to. Snowmelters that do not operate properly can cause damage, waste water and prove very costly. »
