« Design Against Contemporary Art »: An exhibition creates new opportunities for visual experience

After two unsuccessful attempts to be implemented, the exhibition « Design against Contemporary Art » of the Creative Tandem Yo Ko+Ina (Inna Vasileva and Yonko Vasilev) will finally be presented to the public on April 7 at DOZA GalleryS Unfortunately, this will happen in the absence of Yonko Vasilev, who died less than two years ago.

According to the curator of the exhibition Desislava Zafirov, the works question the role of the site – whether it exists to be used or to be understood. « They also problematize the position of the author – designer or artist, communicator or critic – and draw attention to how we perceive the visual in the context of the cultural economy of modern times, » she added in the presentation of the exposition.

Ina Vasileva and Yonko Vasilev

For Zafirova, this project is not just a study of the boundaries between design and contemporary art, but an act of initiation – of partnership, of shared demand, of unfinished dialogue between two followers.

The curator also says that with « design against contemporary art » Ina Vasileva and Yonko Vasilev do not seek conflict, but look at the fragile balance between pragmatic and conceptual, between aesthetic use and aesthetic autonomy.

« After the Words »: Exhibition of Bulgarian Illustrators will be presented at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair

Therefore, this exhibition may be perceived as a project that seeks to destabilize The familiar, to destroy the boundaries between the disciplines and to create new opportunities for a visual and conceptual experience.

The strategies of contemporary art have been used to comment on the functionality of the design and vice versa – the formal language of design is used to ask questions characteristic of contemporary art, according to the presentation of the exhibition.
