Depraetere wants maximum speed on motorways of 100 kilometers per hour: “Good for climate and road safety”

Flemish Minister for Climate Melissa Depraetere (Vooruit) calls on to lower the maximum speed on motorways from 120 to 100 kilometers per hour. The latest news reports on Wednesday. Depraetere wants to follow the Dutch example, because it is good for the climate and road safety. However, the authority lies with another minister.

By the summer, the Flemish Government will turn out with a series of extra measures to reduce CO2 emissions in Flanders, because we are not on track to achieve the climate objectives.

Depraetere argues, among other things, for a limitation of the maximum speed on the highways from 120 to 100 kilometers per hour, such as in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour usually applies on the highways between 6 and 19 hours. Before and after, you can drive 120 or 130 kilometers per hour, if that is safe. The measure was introduced in 2019 to limit the nitrogen battle, after a judgment of the Council of State.

However, the authority for mobility lies with Minister De Ridder (N-VA).© Bart Dewaele

« If you drive 100 instead of 120 kilometers per hour, you also use 20 to 30 percent less fuel and a lower speed also benefits road safety, » said Depraetere. In the past, the VIAS and Groen Traffic Institute have already argued for this. As a minister, Depraetere is not competent for mobility. That authority is with Annick de Ridder (N-VA).
