Democracy does not mean only the victory of the candidate « correct »

« Congratulations, Poland. You have organized elections and has won the » wrong « candidate, so far without allegations of external interference or requests for the resumption of elections, » writes Mary Dejevsky, former correspondent of The Times in Moscow, Washington and Paris. « The elections in Poland can be considered a proof that Poland is a more credible democracy than other countries that have come under communism in the late 1980s. Let’s take for example Romania, which managed to produce an » acceptable « president only last month, in the repeated elections, after the first elections were annulled for the first tour » It was doubtful by the international observers and the protests that continue on the streets made the country of non -government.

The difference from Poland should be clear. Perhaps the elections in Poland were not won by the desired candidate, but democracy does not mean that he will only win the « right » candidate, writes Dejevsky.

The result of the elections in Poland seems reasonable to someone who regularly visits this country, writes Mary Dejevsky. « The more you travel to the east in Poland, the more distant the country seems to be less open to the outside. The population is older and less, many have emigrated, the landscape is more rural. The hostility to the Ukraine war is higher, because the poor Poles have a large number here.

The victory of the Conservatory Karol Nawrocki is important because Poland is often presented as one of the successful stories of the European Union, a country that has economically taken off after accession to the EU, has reached a GDP of nearly a thousand billion dollars and, at least on paper, has a standard of living that approaches Japan. It has armed forces more numerous than those of Great Britain or France. And the Poles who have emigrated in search of a better life are now beginning to return home. All this would not have been possible without the EU help, consider the Poles who voted against Nawrocki and consider it a fatal danger to their country’s progress, for the independence of justice, for freedom of expression. The new president Nawrocki is also presented throughout the European Mainstream press – as an existential threat to Polish and European democracy and the EU « values ».

But Nawrocki is no fascist and no aberration. It is not the pro-Russian that its foreign policies have misinformed, as long as it is on a black list of Moscow because it has been involved in Poland’s decision to remove the monuments of the Red Army.

« Nawrocki is a product of the moment in Polish politics, which is now dominated by the ideas of sovereignty and identity. The British governor of Nigeria said, at the time of the First World War, the following about the recalcitrant Nigerians: » Their dissatisfaction is a measure of their progress.  » Cultural that were suppressed during the search for prosperity.

Under both conservative and Eurosceptic and liberal governments, Poland has known to take advantage of all European programs and funds. Poland, together with Romanians, paid the highest price for this European aid through the highest emigration in peace time in the history of Europe. Unlike Romania, Poland knew how to maintain and develop its industry, to close their eyes in the face of corruption businesses as long as they promoted strategic interests (on the transport corridors from Central Asia to the Baltic Sea). Then, the former conservative governance initiated programs to return to the country of those who emigrated, of their children. But this government, like the new president Nawrocki, are considered retrograde, extremists, danger to the « EU » and European cohesion.

If European cohesion means the position towards Russia and Ukraine, then President Nawrocki and the party that supported – law and justice – can be considered a better guarantee than Liberal Prime Minister Tusk. Of the leaders of Poland, the last to shake hands with Vladimir Putin was not Jaroslaw Kaczynski nor Duda president, but Tusk himself. The new President Nawrocki will not withdraw from the support given to Ukraine, but he said clearly that the Poles in need will have priority in the help of the state in front of the Ukrainian refugees, as the Polish farmers will be protected in front of the cereal wave without customs duties coming from Ukraine.

Tusk will not be able to control the foreign policy of Poland. President Nawrocki does not want a polexit, but he wants a Europe of the nations instead of an illusory European nations. Its role will be a disruptive element in Brussels, to make it easier for the Trump administration to treat with EU states than to the European Commission. It was supported by the Trump administration as George Simion was not supported in Romania. He had a visit to the US Secretary for Internal Security in Poland, Kristi Noem, and a blessing in the Oval Office, before the first round. President Trump needed the victory in Poland, after conservative candidates were defeated in the Romanian elections, Australia, Canada and then South Korea (where the new Democrat president will have a tougher position than Japan, disturbing the US plans to pull Seoul into a defense structure with Australia and Australia).

Nawrocki’s liberal rival, Mayor Warsaw Vafal Trzaskowski decided to eliminate crosses from officials and proudly participate in LGBT marches in Warsaw. He jubilated then, being admitted by the Polish liberals from the big cities and the European press. But then he had to make the desperate attempt to attract the votes of young people who voted largely with parties to Nawrocki, and this attempt not only did not bring him votes, but made him lose his progressive base.

In addition to the rural area and the small Polish cities, the young people voted in a larger proportion with Nawrocki and so did the Polish diaspora. He has attracted intellectuals, because, at 42, he is a respected historian, with all his parties. He has a life experience that is superior to Trzaskowski, he was born in a very poor family, he knows what the interloping world in the city of Port Gdansk means, what the stalks between the galleries of football teams mean, he practiced the box, he was a hotel guard. « Many Poles in the big cities want to be French, British or Italian. We are proud to be Poles, » says a resident of Radom, a small city, full of history but fallen. This was Narwocki’s electorate, the « wrong » candidate, who procured prostitutes for the hotel customers to be able to study and help the family, while the progressive TRZASKOWSKI participates in LGBT marches.

President Nawrocki will further emphasize the political struggle with Liberal Prime Minister Donald Tusk than he did his predecessor Andrzej Duda, considers most of the analyzes published after the elections. It increases the probability that Tusk’s heterogeneous government (formed by the civic, liberal platform, and many left and center parties) fall before 2027 and reach anticipated.
