Declared innocent after 38 years in prison

A man was declared on Tuesday, innocent by the British court after spending 38 years in prison for a woman’s murder in 1986. Peter Sullivan is the victim of a judicial mistake that spent more time in seclusion in the United Kingdom.

At 68 – he was convicted when he had 30 – he had contested the decision several times, but to no avail. Sullivan was arrested a month after 21 -year -old Diane Sidwell was murdered in August 1986 and found dead in Bebington, northwestern England, about 10 kilometers from Liverpool.

The London Appeal Court acquitted it, signaling that the DNA found in the victim did not correspond to his.

In a statement read by his lawyer, Sarah Myatt, Sullivan said he was not « disgusted » or « bitter ». « I lost my freedom four decades ago for a crime that I did not commit. What happened to me was very unfair, but that does not diminish the seriousness of what happened. It was a loss of inhuman and terrible life, » he added, according to the agency AFP

Myatt considered the decision as « an unprecedented and historical moment » and that with this decision was « finally justice was made. »
