Decisions about the sea is based on knowledge
The sea contains a world of unparalleled opportunities. A successful Norwegian joint project increases the knowledge we have about the seabed. There is good news for business, fisheries and the environment.
The author Jules Verne dreamed of a world where people could explore the depths of the sea. Technology gives us the opportunity to make this dream come true. The UN Sea Conference, which is going on this week in Nice, gives us a perfect moment to reflect on the significance of the sea – and how important it is to continue exploration, with respect for nature’s own boundaries.
Why is the mapping of the deep sea important?
Climate and ecosystems: The seabed plays a key role in the Earth’s climate control and species diversity.
Resources and technology: In the sea and on the seabed there are biological resources that can contribute to medical and technological development, and business development.
Security and navigation: Knowledge of bottom conditions and ocean currents is crucial for safe shipping.
Preservation of species: Many forms of life depend on the habitats of the seabed, and research helps us protect them. Recently, 70 new species were discovered outside Svalbard using DNA analyzes.
Norway’s foremost professional environments; The Institute of Marine Research, the Norwegian Geological Survey and the Mapping Authority, have joined forces in the Maryano program to map the seabed. Through its mapping with data to the MAREANO program, the Socket Directorate contributes, especially in the deep sea. This year, the program celebrates its 20th anniversary.
In the autumn, the research vessel FF « Crown Prince Haakon » will explore the seabed in the Norwegian Sea. This will provide new and important knowledge for, among other things, follow -up of the new Sea Protection Act. The survey of the seabed opens doors to new technological, economic and environmental opportunities, but also strengthens our responsibility to protect nature.
