Death toll collapsed nightclub Dominican Republic rises to at least 98


The number of deaths after the collapse of the roof of a nightclub in the Dominican Republic rose to at least 98 on Wednesday morning. More than 160 people were also injured. International press agencies report this.

The roof of the club Jet Set in the Dominican capital Santo Domingo collapsed on Tuesday during a Merengue concert, which was then busy for an hour. In the popular nightclub, which has been around since 1973, politicians and former top athletes were present. The Merengue concerts take place every week.

According to North American media, the Dominican Merengue singer Rubby Pérez, who occurred when the roof collapsed, died. Nelsy Cruz, the governor of the northwestern province of Montecristi, died of her injuries in the hospital, writes Reuters news agency based on local authorities. Former MLB baseball players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco also died, reports the Dominican baseball competition on X.

When the roof of the nightclub was last inspected, it is not known, says Reuters. Survivors are still being sought.
